Why wand-washed concrete looks striped

A pressure wand cleans in a narrow arc, so overlapping passes leave the zebra striping you see on a lot of driveways. We use a rotary surface cleaner, which holds a fixed distance and covers a wide band at consistent pressure. The slab dries one shade because every square inch got the same treatment.

Pressure is set to the surface. Older Radford walks and steps from the 1950s get a lighter touch than a new broom-finish drive, so the aggregate is never pitted and the cream finish isn't cut away.

Stains get treated, not just rinsed

Rust from fertilizer, well water and metal furniture, oil and transmission drips under a parking spot, tire marks, and the black organic film in shaded areas are all different problems and all need pre-treatment. We work them spot by spot before the surface cleaner runs, so the whole slab comes up even instead of clean-with-shadows.

Edges, expansion joints, steps and the strip along the garage door get detailed by hand — that's where the dirt line is most obvious once the middle is bright.

Runoff is planned before we start so slurry goes to a drain or a lawn edge and not across your clean walkway or into a basement door well. Plantings along the drive get rinsed, and any siding, garage door or brick that gets overspray is rinsed down with it.
